Due to massive public pressure from WE THE PEOPLE, Plano ISD has started to remove all of the sexually explicit books from their libraries that were up for reconsideration AND they have committed to go through the rest of their collections to identify other books that may need to be removed.
This is a huge WIN but we are not done yet. One complaint our PISD Trustees have is that the majority of people who spoke at our last school board meeting were not Plano residents. We need Plano residents to show up, and show out! If you would like to attend their next school board meeting, it is tonight 11/08 @6:00 at the PISD Admin Building: 2700 W. 15th St. Meeting room will be immediately on your left as your enter. We are asking you to come and be prepared to stay for a lengthy night again. Here are a few ideas for potential speeches:
"Thank them" for removing the reconsidered books, request more transparency in future removals and more parental involvement in the reconsideration committees
Write a speech asking "how" they are identifying bad books. What list are they using? Would they like help? What procedure are they using to find these books?
Tell them "Thank you" for removal of these books, but remind them they've known about these books for at least a year and maintained they couldn't remove them. Clearly they have had the authority to remove them all along and now the parental trust is broken and will need to be mended. How do they intend to do so?
A speech about how committees are chosen. We found out that Julie Briggs, head of Library services, is responsible for selecting the committee members and we do not think she should be allowed to do this in the future. Anyone who served on these most recent committees should NEVER again be given the authority to determine what is appropriate for minors. They have shown very poor judgement and should be held accountable.
How are they implementing the community standard? Give them ideas on what you think might be wise and good in representing the community.
Ask where the removed books are going. Who is receiving them? Tell them you do not want ANY OF THOSE books put into classroom libraries.
If you have sent an email asking questions, we suggest you read your email with their response to your question to put on record.
Lastly, a speech about how disrespectful they are in placing parent non-agenda items at the end of the night at 10:45p.m. Give suggestion on how to make the School Board meeting more parent friendly.
If you want to make a public comment, you must sign up to speak by 4:30pm on the day of the meeting . Click here to sign up for today:
Plano ISD Board Meetings – Public Comment Sign-Up
THINGS TO NOTE:
The meeting starts at 6pm. There will be a lot of sitting and waiting so bring food and/or snacks if you want! The start of the meeting is acknowledgements of schools, staff, or students. That can take 30 mins or more and usually fills the board room with family members of those being recognized. So it’s OK if you’re not there promptly at 6PM.
Public speakers on non-agenda items are typically the very last thing on the agenda. However, if they have a lot of speakers sign up, they may switch things up! Be prepared to be flexible!
Be prepared for a LATE NIGHT. They make it painful for parents to participate but our kids are worth it!!!
Although more speakers bring more pressure, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SPEAK. We need a mix of speakers and warm bodies to fill the room. They have to know we are watching!!
Thank you so much for your time and your passion to save our kids!
